Saxo is a Danish bank. Saxo Bank A/S is licensed by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority, the DFSA, and holds FCA authorisation for UK clients. The exact contracting entity — Saxo Capital Markets UK Ltd or the main A/S entity — should be confirmed at application. The bank structure brings dual-layer oversight: FCA conduct supervision for the UK, and DFSA banking prudential supervision at the group level. Saxo is a multi-asset platform: listed options, futures, bonds, ETFs and equities alongside CFDs. It is not a pure retail CFD shop, and it does not market itself as one. The notes below set out what the bank structure and the product breadth mean for a UK trader.

Regulatory snapshot: United Kingdom

Retail forex and CFD trading is legal and regulated in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Post-Brexit the UK runs its own regime: the FCA mirrors the ESMA-style 30:1 leverage cap on majors and negative-balance protection, and adds the s.21 financial-promotions regime and the Consumer Duty, which hold firms to a high standard for fair, clear and not-misleading communications. Our coverage is editorial and non-advisory. Confirm any firm on the FCA Register before depositing.

FCA authorisation and the bank structure

Saxo Bank A/S is licensed as a bank by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority. For UK clients, Saxo holds FCA authorisation. Confirm at application which entity holds your account — Saxo Capital Markets UK Ltd or the main A/S entity — because the FSCS cover and the complaints pathway attach to the FCA-authorised entity.

The bank structure means two supervisors are involved: the FCA for UK conduct, and the DFSA for banking prudential matters at group level. This is a different arrangement from a standalone CFD broker. Verify the current FCA permission and the exact entity name on the FCA register at register.fca.org.uk before opening an account.

FCA retail rules

The FCA PS20/10 rules apply to Saxo's UK retail clients: leverage on major currency pairs capped at 30:1, mandatory negative-balance protection, and a prohibition on client inducements. Bonus and incentive offers are not permitted under this regime.

The FCA Consumer Duty, in force since 2023, requires fair value and clear communications for retail clients. These conduct obligations apply to the FCA-authorised Saxo entity irrespective of the group's bank status.

FSCS cover via the FCA entity

Eligible clients are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £85,000 per person, via the FCA-authorised entity, if the firm fails. The relevant protection is the UK FSCS attached to the entity on your account agreement, not the Danish deposit-guarantee scheme that covers the bank's home-market banking activity.

Because Saxo can contract UK clients through more than one entity, confirming which one holds your account is the step that determines which compensation scheme applies. Do not assume the bank's overall scale substitutes for entity-level cover.

Platforms: SaxoTraderGO and SaxoTraderPRO

Saxo offers SaxoTraderGO and SaxoTraderPRO, both proprietary. It does not offer MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 or cTrader. Traders who specifically require a MetaTrader or cTrader environment will not find it at Saxo.

SaxoTraderGO is the browser and mobile platform; SaxoTraderPRO is the desktop platform aimed at higher-frequency and multi-asset users. Both carry the firm's full multi-asset range. Confirm which instruments and order types are available on each before committing.

Multi-asset breadth and no spread betting

Saxo's range covers listed options, futures, bonds, ETFs and equities in addition to CFDs. This is wider than a typical retail CFD broker and is the core of Saxo's positioning. A UK trader who wants exchange-traded products alongside CFDs in one account is the intended user.

Saxo does not offer UK spread betting. Spread betting is a UK-specific product, and Saxo is known as a multi-asset platform that does not provide it. A UK trader who specifically wants the CGT treatment of spread betting under current HMRC rules will not get it here; confirm product availability with Saxo directly, as ranges can change.

Funding, account currency and minimums

Saxo offers GBP-denominated accounts for UK clients. Funding methods include Faster Payments, debit card and bank wire. A same-currency account avoids conversion costs on deposits held in pounds.

Saxo has historically set a higher minimum deposit than pure retail CFD brokers, consistent with its multi-asset, bank-platform positioning. Confirm the current minimum and any funding fees with Saxo directly before depositing, as these are set by the firm and can change.
